Streszczenie: Exotic Smoothness is the trial to solve some fundamental problems in physics (like dark matter/energy and/or quantum gravity) using first principles. The maximal, smooth atlas of a manifold is called the smoothness structure.\break The Euclidean space Rn has a unique smoothness structure for n/=4 and a manifold is carrying this structure (induced by an embedding in some RN) called the standard smoothness structure. The work of many mathematicians uncovered the following picture: in dimension < 4 there is only the standard smoothness structure and for dimension > 4 there is only\break a finite number of different smoothness structure (called exotic smoothness). Only in dimension 4, one finds an infinity of exotic smoothness structures. In this seminar, we will present partly the mathematics behind this result. We will explain how one can construct exotic smoothness structures on compact 4-manifolds as well on R4 and S3xR. At the second part, we will also discuss the physical implications. Even in the last decade, new promising results were obtained among them a possible explanation for dark energy, inflation, some quantum gravitational results and the coupling to matter.
